Pablo
I want to keep learning about the human mind
Pablo is a nature lover. He enjoys long walks in the woods—meditating and taking photos along the way. In addition to developing his creative and spiritual sides, his time spent in nature also helps him manage the depression and anxiety that have affected him throughout his life.
Every day has been a struggle, but he hopes to have a life that’s easier to live—and more dignified.
Since childhood, Pablo has known that he was different. He felt that others couldn’t understand him, and he was never interested in playing with other children or socializing with people. Instead, most of the time he preferred being secluded in a dark place, separated from others.
I didn’t like being with people or spending time with them. But being closed off from others, living in a bubble like that, makes you feel alone, cast aside, and excluded. You feel that you are unable to be accepted by society because they see you as ‘different.’
As Pablo grew up, these complex feelings continued to affect him. He struggled with his mental health and found it difficult to function normally in everyday life, negatively impacting his relationships, family, and work.
But a few years ago—already a grown man with his own child—he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD). He finally had an explanation for what had always made him feel different.
Despite the daily difficulties he faces and society’s stigmas about mental health, Pablo doesn’t let his diagnoses define him. Instead, he sees himself as someone privileged to have a different—and more creative—mind, like many well-known artists, writers, mathematicians, and intellectuals who have also lived with mental health conditions.
His photography, which reflects his own, unique way of seeing the world, is an example of this.
This mind of mine is complex, but it can also be amazing. I know it has a lot to give. Minds like these open up many more possibilities. We feel life in a way that others cannot. These types of minds are a possibility—they exist—and we are proof of that. We are still learning about them, and there are many things yet to discover.
Pablo wants to help shape that learning process. Currently, he is working on two projects. The first is a line of t-shirts with designs aimed at creating visibility of “genius” minds with mental disorders. The other musical project includes the creation of his own music and collaborations with other musicians that are affected by mental health conditions.
In addition to raising awareness about mental health and fighting stigma, Pablo also hopes his projects will help promote awareness about suicide prevention.
We are losing a lot of people that could contribute to history, science, and our society. Every mind is different, and we need to respect that. Each person’s mind is a universe, and we are all part of the same universe as well. We are universes within the universe.
