About Julie

Julie M. McCarthy, PhD, is a clinician-scientist in the Division of Psychotic Disorders at McLean Hospital. Her research aims to identify neurobiological and psychosocial treatment targets and develop/evaluate treatments for individuals and families experiencing co-occurring psychosis spectrum and substance use disorders.

She is particularly interested in using telehealth and a multimodal approach to better understand and address barriers to treatment, with the goal of enhancing motivation for recovery-oriented behavior change through personalized medicine.

Her research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and awards from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence and the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology.

Dr. McCarthy is a clinical psychologist specializing in evidence-based treatments, like cognitive behavior therapy, for individuals with schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and for families who are interested in helping someone struggling with addiction.
