What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Meet Andy.

The past few days he’s been on top of the world. Sharper, more alive. He suddenly understands the universe’s secrets, how everything’s connected. He stays up all night channeling these truths into a book convinced he will become famous, only to produce pages that are actually just gibberish.

He goes to a party and talks a mile a minute trying to keep up with the million thoughts racing through his head. Others stare at him, confused, and wonder if he’s on speed. He drives home dangerously fast, anxious to resume his mission to explain the cosmos.

Behaviors like Andy’s are a sign of bipolar disorder, which affects the chemistry and function of the brain. It’s quite common, affecting more than one in 100 people.

Bipolar disorder doesn’t always make Andy feel like he’s on rocket fuel. He’s had periods of being depressed and unmotivated when the world feels dark, lonely, and meaningless. Other times he feels irritated and suspicious. Fortunately, for Andy, this cycle going from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows doesn’t continue.

The people who care about him recognize there is a problem and seek professional help. With support and treatment, he gets back on track, back to being, well, Andy.

If you think you or someone you know is struggling with bipolar disorder, be like Andy and get the right help.
