Once you admit your condition, there are so many resources
Depression is just as serious as having diabetes. They may differ, but both are serious conditions that need treatment.
About two years ago, Maria was admitted to the OCD Institute at McLean Hospital, a residential treatment center to help those struggling with obsessive compulsive disorder.
It was there that she learned about exposure and response prevention therapy, which she describes as “learning to face the fear and be uncomfortable with it until you are able to eventually conquer it.”
This therapy, she says, was very helpful for her trichotillomania (pulling out of one’s own hair) and dermatillomania (picking of one’s own skin).
At the OCD Institute, Maria also learned mindfulness and other approaches to help with her depression and anxiety.
Treatment has helped me tremendously—by helping me realize I’m not alone, by giving me skills to cope with my conditions and tools to help overcome some of them.
Maria began receiving treatment for her issues while in her mid-20s, but she had been struggling since around the age of 12.
Over the years, she has had many ups and downs—a few good stretches followed by periods of difficulty.
“Treatment has helped me tremendously—by helping me realize I’m not alone, by giving me skills to cope with my conditions and tools to help overcome some of them.”
She says she was doing well in her 20s, but, after the birth of her second baby, she “had a bit of a meltdown.” This prompted a doctor’s visit and her road to treatment through therapy and medication.
Once you admit your condition, there are so many resources.
Mental health disorders may be a lifelong condition, but it is a treatable and livable condition if you ask for help.
Maria is passionate about spreading the word about mental health stigma and the importance of getting help.
Each year, she participates in fundraising walks for mental health and suicide awareness. She is also eager to tell people her story in hopes of inspiring others.
I’ve been very passionate about being involved in the mental health community since being able to share my own stories.
It was hard for me to even understand these issues, and it took a while to be able to talk to others, but I’m so glad I have.
I love to listen to other people’s stories and tell my own, especially if it can help anyone.
